Dear Neighbor,

My name is John McCann, and I’m a candidate for Hilton Head Island Town Council, Ward 6. I’m contacting you more than a year before our next local election, so we can get to know one another better. I want to listen to your ideas, and that takes time.

 

 

My wife, Valerie, and I love living on Hilton Head Island and have been residents of Port Royal Plantation for the past 12 years. We are enriched by our island’s natural beauty and inspired by the sense of community we have found. No matter where you travel in the world, when you cross the Hilton Head Island bridges, you know you are home. Nature’s beauty always welcomes you back.

 

Keeping our community healthy and vibrant in the coming years will not be easy. Much of what we built is rapidly aging. Markets are changing, infrastructure needs are growing, and in challenging economic times, we can’t just throw money at problems.

 

We need to make some serious choices. We need leaders who understand our options and can explain them. That’s why I want to represent you as Ward 6 councilman.

 

Among my list of concerns and ideas:

• We need to revitalize our island’s buildings and infrastructure.
• We need to create a Village Center, a meeting place for residents, visitors and businesses.
• We need to limit and reduce the size and scope of town government.
• We need to ensure our natural environment remains healthy and sustainable.
• We need to protect, promote and enhance access to our unique historical resources, especially Mitchellville, for tourists, residents and posterity.
• We need to increase public understanding and participation by televising Town Council meetings.
• We need to keep our airport viable and safe, yet compatible with our community.

As an experienced leader of both business and civic organizations, I have many ideas on these and other subjects. But I’m most interested in what you have to say about them.
